Enhanciles, as they have been described by Warren Ellis. They are war made flesh. They are good men and women, remade into monsters.

But that is not the only way for humanity to increase its capabilities. Evolution (or something else) seems to be steering us along this path, albeit not as fast as the men in dark rooms would like.

Scanners are humans touched by a power from outside the walls of understanding. Their eyes are jet black and see more then we care to. They lead a tortured existence, seeing things that drive many mad, and of course, they are hunted for their abilities by every government on earth.

This story takes place in a world where the average citizen knows nothing of these battles over the future of humanity. It is a world very like ours except for the existence of ancient outside influences and the individuals whom they touch.
